Brooklyn Half Marathon
Brooklyn, New York

woo hoo! This was a fun exciting run. I had signed up for this race awhile back and stoked that I got in. Brooklyn was always a fun race I did for many years then it got so popular the lottery system made it impossible to get in. Not this year—they opened the flood gates and over 20,000 runners lined up in Prospect Park for one quick loop around the park and head towards Coney Island. The last 7 miles is all flat. I remember running this race when it started in Coney Island and ended in Prospect Park, boring! They finally got smart— end in coney island!!! One of my favorite things to do is ride the Cyclone Roller coaster and there is nothing better after a fun run, plus they always give runners a discount day of race. I freeeekin love it. Roller coasters & a hot dog!

(Matty is running his first half marathon ever. Can you tell how excited we are)

So I went into this run thinking FUN. I managed to keep my fitness level up since Boston, had a good lil break post Boston at the beach and felt pretty relaxed running my first race since Boston. Well wait — I did run a little 10k beach run 5 days after Boston at the Rockaways but that was just a jog to loosen my legs, and 5 days post Boston I was still hobbling…. Anyway – Coach didn’t have me on any kind of training schedule, just some basic runs to stay in shape. He did say I could easily PR if I wanted but it was really nice just showing up to have fun. A few of my friends were also running and it was nice to just be present, remember why I love running in the first pace!

(I dont why I look so serious, i was having fun!)

We had nice warm weather—60s, no sun, no wind. I started out with my friends and then soon took off on my own. It was easssssy for me, TOO easy.. I was having a blast, didn’t push myself hard, ran consistent, enjoyed every bit of the race. I noticed a lot of cops & dogs and overall security was heightened —I wondered how races would change post Boston. I finished in 1:45 and wasn’t tired, it really felt like an easy training run. That was good! I was still in good shape. I waited for my friends and couldn’t wait to ride the roller coaster. Super fun day! And even tho I was happy to run just for fun, take it easy and felt great, there was still that part of me that wished I had pushed it. Coach was right, I could have totally PR this course, but hey sometimes its not always about racing and going fast. I don’t want to get burnt out. I have bigger goals to look forward too. Like my trail marathon in D.C. coming up, and my first 50k in July.
